Oops, I forgot one! I also grew up with _A Little Princess_ ()--live action--based on the book (by the way, the 1995 Warner version has very little relation to the book).

I grew up watching:
_The Rescuers_ and _The Rescuers Down Under_--animated

_Caddie Woodlawn_--live action--based on the book

_A Girl of the Limberlost_--live action--based on the book

_The Secret Garden_ (1984 BBC version, though there are three others)--live action--based on the book

_The Littlest Horse Thieves_--live action

More recently, I've enjoyed:
_Lilo and Stitch_--animated

_Pollyanna_ (2002 Masterpiece Theatre version)--live action--based on the book (by the way, the 1960 Disney version has very little relation to the book)

http://allthingsfamily.com/ has LOTS of good choices to look through!

Also, the 1968 version of _Heidi_ has been recommended to me, but I haven't seen it yet.

"Anastasia" isn't TOO bad - Katy is really into Anastasia right now. I'm not quite to the point where the music drives me insane....but nearly.

Katy also loves Bibleman. I bought it at a garage sale thinking it might be cute. Whoa. Talk about a Batman knock-off - come on! Let's be original people. GREAT morals, but horrible acting. Katy thinks it's wonderful, though, and it's definitely better than "Shark Boy and Lava Girl"....

I think some of the movies coming out in recent years feature some good female leads like Erin Brockovich, but these all seem to be for a mature audience. I like the girl in Lilo and Stich. I know what you mean by these movies. I also notice the princess is always beautiful, of course. The movie Shreck is great for showing beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This is a good one since the girl is not really beautiful once it gets dark out, but Shreck still falls in love with her. I love it.

Don't ask me. I'm the one who took my son on an educational vacation to Hannibal, Missouri and told him all about Mark Twain, visited the caves, etc. When we got home he declared he wasn't going back to school and wanted to smoke. He's 6!

Ack! You're right! Only Fox and Hound is kinda depressing. "We'll always be friends, won't we?" as the hound is trying to kill the fox. Sheesh. And those main characters are still a BOY fox and hound.

Hmm...I'll have to work on this. There's got to be some good ones out there. If I find them, I'll post them here!

Thanks for stopping by, Mrs. CPA! I just joined CHBM--I just love the concept! :)

Don't forget that all those Disney movies either have a bad mother/stepmother or a dead one. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for mothers either.

Alas, I have no other suggestions for you. Except The Fox and the Hound, because the only women on there are the old lady and the girl fox, who are both good. (again with the dead mother business.)
